The year is 1992, and you have three of Peugeot’s finest hot hatches to choose from.

DD, Track & Burn. Go!

Kinja'd!!!

The Peugeot 106 Rallye, 100BHP 1.3 I4.

Kinja'd!!!

The Peugeot 205 GTi, 120BHP 1.9 I4.

Kinja'd!!!

The Peugeot 309 GTi, 130BHP 1.9 I4.

The Rallye is by far the lightest weighing in at only 825kg, while the 205 is world renowned as a benchmark for hot hatches and beat Audi and Lancia at their own game the rallies of the 80s, the 309 is also a serious contender with its Simca-Talbot roots and 205 GTi internals. This will be a tough one, you choose.

DD 309, because biggest and most comfortable.

Track 106, because lightest and best to toss around.

Burn 205, because it’s the oldest.

That’s brutal. All three are excellent. Don’t we have some VW or something Japanese/American to burn?

Track: 106. No doubt here.

Daily: 205. I know the 309 is supposedly slightly better but I’m a 205 GTi owner dammit and I’m not burning that.

Burn: Nope, won’t do it.

Burn any choice of VW, really.

This Mazda 323 GT-R would burn all of the Peugeots.

Yet I wouldn’t even pay half for that as I would for a similar condition 205 GTi. I know I’m biased, but still.

DD: 309 GTi-16, because largest, most practical and most comfortable because wheelbase.

Track: 309 GTi-16, because most powerful and more stable than a 205 GTi because wheelbase.

Burn: Gasoline.

DD: 205 gti, hatch back, and small.

Track: 106 Rallye, very light, and white steel wheels.

Burn: 306 gti, not a hatch back.

Unlike today where brands like Honda are all but dead, all the Japanese brands sold well in the 1980s. Really well. Given that fact and their mechanical reliability it’s amazing how few Japanese cars from the 1980s have survived. I guess rust is a major issue, as is the lack of an emotional connection. Also: parts prices and availability.

I see more 1980s Peugeot 205s than I see 1980s Japanese cars combined. It’s that bad.

I wouldn’t dismiss VW myself, they’ve made some great cars in the past.

I approve of the Mazda though.

The survivability rate of japanese cars tends to be higher when they are built in Britain or France.

DD the 309 because liftback. Always DD liftbacks.

Track... I’m gonna go with the 205 due to power to weight, but damn, it’s close. If it were a 1.6 106, it’d win over the 205.

That leaves the 106 to burn.

Mind you, I haven’t driven any of these...

Daily drove a 309 SRi for three years - Amazing car, I fully understand the hype.

Driven a couple of 106s and owned one for a while (white, too) - Absolute go-cart.

DD: 309 no contest.

Track: 106 Rallye - Also, those steelies are the best ever made.

Burn: 205.

Pictured, my Pugs.

Thanks! I had an awesome time with them all and I really do miss ‘em :( I keep an eye out for the 309 to pop up for sale again... If it does... it’s coming home.

I upgraded to a 206 GTi, and while it was much faster, there was just a little charm lacking. The 309 and the 106 were massive fun to push in a slow kinda way... like you would change right up to 5th doing 40mph just so you could blip down though all the gears coming into a slow corner. Also, and because of that trait, they were a hoot to nip around a city in - Italian Job dreams, if I may wax poetic.

The 206 GTi was another kettle of fish. It was fast in a “go faster” kinda way. Lots of grip and you sat bang in the middle of the thing. MASSIVE doors. Felt great on the open road and obviously built a bit tighter.

Went and found a few more pics too:

Dammit I hate you. But I have a solution.

DD the 309. I like its weird liftback looks the best and you can honestly say you drive a Talbot! (which is awesome in my book) Also, 130hp should make it palatable for motorway driving.

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Track 205. It’s happiest when three-wheeling its way around paved corners and bouncing from hairpin to hairpin.

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Rally the Rallye, of course! 100 hp is not so much that you’ll end up in a bush if things go pear-shaped but still plenty to rev around a little dirt path!
